Powerful Gayatri Mantras

Gayatri Mantras - Lord Brahma

In addition to the original Gayatri mantra, which is the one generally known and chanted across the Hindus and the Westerners, there are other powerful Gayatri mantras, which are less known to the masses.

According to orthodox views of the Hindu society in times of the caste system, Shudras (the lowest of the four castes, the laboring class) and women were not allowed to chant the Vedic Gayatri mantra. That is perhaps the reason why other Gayatri mantras were disclosed.  Most of these mantras are a certain adaptation of the original Gayatri mantra, but worshipping different Deities.

The structure of the mantras is practically the same, because the words dhimahi, vidmahe and prachodayat are common to all the Gayatri mantras. The main difference is, that the original Gayatri mantra invokes Savitr (a solar Deity in the Rigvedas, sometimes identified as ‘the Sun’), whereas the other Gayatri mantras invoke other Deities, such as Vishnu, Shiva and many more.

Final Word

There are many other types of Gayatri mantras representing all kinds of other Deities (Krishna, Daksinamurti, Indra…), elements of the Universe (Surya, Chandra, Agni…) or even other mantras itself (Yam, Ram…).

Another two special types of Gayatri mantras were assigned to the lower castes of the traditional Hindu society – one for Kshatryias (the warrior class) and another for Vaishyas (the merchant class).

The Gayatri mantras are very powerful. If you chant them with wide-open heart and mind free of prejudice, they can bring you significant improvement in any aspect of your life. However, make sure your intentions are purely sattvic – do not strive to gain personal advantage at the expense of others.

Use the Gayatri mantras with respect and dignity, and only for your own personal and spiritual development – and your life will be in your own hands!
